Appointment of a Group Chief Executive of Bass PLC

Bass PLC ("Bass") today, 6 September 2000, announces that Tim Clarke, currently Chief Executive of Bass Leisure Retail, will become Group Chief Executive of Bass on 1 October 2000. He will assume this role from Sir Ian Prosser, presently Chairman and Chief Executive, who will continue as Chairman with responsibility for the strategic direction of the Company.

Bass Leisure Retail will be run by Adam Fowle as Managing Director, Pubs and Bars and Tony Hughes as Managing Director, Restaurants.

Tom Oliver will continue as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bass Hotels & Resorts.

Richard North will continue as Group Finance Director and Chairman of Britvic.

Sir Ian Prosser, Chairman Bass PLC said:

"I am delighted that we are appointing Tim Clarke as Group Chief Executive. He has excellent experience in the hotel business and in restaurants and pubs and was responsible for Group strategy earlier within his ten years in Bass. He is well qualified to fill the position of Group Chief Executive."

Tim Clarke (43) joined the Bass Group in 1990 and became Director of Group Strategy in 1991. In 1992 he was appointed Managing Director of Bass Hotels EMEA and subsequently became CEO of Bass Leisure Retail in 1995. He was appointed to the Board in 1996.

Prior to joining Bass, Tim joined Panmure Gordon & Co in 1979 as an Investment Analyst, subsequently becoming Partner and Head of Research.

He is also a non-executive Director of Debenhams plc.
