Heart of the Community national winner
In September 2011, the Chaddlewood Inn, Plymouth was named the national winner of Mitchells & Butlers' Heart of The Community Pub of the Year Award.
The annual Heart of the Community Pub of the Year Awards recognise the restaurants and pubs across the Mitchells & Butlers estate which have been active and supportive members of their local communities.
The Chaddlewood Inn Heart of the Community Committee has specifically been set up to plan, organise and make a success of its charity programme. This organisation has meant the pub team have worked tirelessly over the last year to hold a large number of events, to benefit lots of charities.
They've had ladies pamper nights, a poker night, an Easter raffle, a Grand National sweepstake and a pub treasure hunt. The Chaddlewood Inn also hosted a Family Football Fun Day, which proved a great success, with cake stalls, a raffle and a sponsored head shave all helping to boost the fundraising.
The team are also thoughtful in selecting the charities they support. From large national charities, such as Guide Dogs for the Blind or Cancer Research, through to smaller family based causes where local people need a little help and support from the community.
The Chaddlewood Inn hosts a library and invites customers to swap books free of charge. The Golf Society and football team are also central to the pubs success and have created a real sense of family. This family network means the staff and customers often go above and beyond by offering support and time to local residents who maybe in need - even helping one family move house!
Over £20,000 in prize money is donated by Mitchells & Butlers through the awards scheme, which helps the winning pubs to support a number of different local and national charities. The Chaddlewood Inn received a cheque for £11,000 which the pub plans to donate to host of customer nominated charities in the coming months.
