Nicholson's joins forces with RNLI this Summer

This summer, Nicholson's pubs are joining forces with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), to support the charity's drowning prevention campaign, Respect The Water. Backed by RNLI ambassador and rugby union star, Jack Nowell, the campaign urges people across the UK to fight their instincts and remember one simple skill – floating – which could save lives from drowning.

We all love a great pint by the river come the summertime and, as the mercury rises, it can be tempting to cool off in the water. As an island nation, the UK has a rich heritage with the sea and rivers but sadly there are around 190 deaths at the UK and Irish coasts each year. Many of these deaths are people who accidentally slip, trip or fall into the water.

Stop fighting the water and FLOAT

The first instinct on sudden immersion into cold water is to thrash and try to swim but this in fact makes you more likely to drown as you lose air and strength with the cold-water shock. Nicholson's and the RNLI are asking the public to fight their instincts, not the water, by 'floating' – a technique where you simply float on your back, catch your breath while letting the cold-water shock pass. You'll have a much better chance of survival.

Staff on hand

Nicholson's pubs across the country are taking part in the six-week long campaign to help educate their guests about water safety. Team members will undergo throw-line rescue training by the RNLI team at riverside pubs arming them with water safety advice for the busy summer ahead.

Limited edition fish menu

Developed especially for the RNLI partnership, the limited-edition menu will include the likes of ocean fish and chips with lemon sole, scampi and samphire; seafood stew; potroasted cod; grilled salmon niçoise; and soft shell crab tempura with chipotle mayonnaise. Plus, 50p from every dish purchased will go straight to the RNLI. Punters can also enjoy 'Fish and Fizz' - fish and chips and a glass of Prosecco (or Skinny Fizz) for just £13.95. A match made in heaven, the crisp acidity of the fizz compliments the batter and acts like a fresh squeeze of lemon.
