Animal Welfare

We only work with suppliers who can demonstrate considerate management of good animal welfare practises back to farms.

Animal welfare is vitally important to Mitchells & Butlers

We are dedicated to working with suppliers who are committed to best practice in animal welfare and work with them to educate and ensure that our standards and targets are being met.

Across our businesses, we are committed to ensuring that our suppliers of meat, poultry, dairy and farmed fish products procure material produced from livestock reared in accordance with the ‘Five Freedoms’ principle developed by the Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC), regardless of country of origin.

The ‘Five Freedoms’ principle

These five freedoms mean that animals in the supply chain experience:

  1. Freedom from hunger or thirst - by providing ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour
  2. Freedom from discomfort - by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area
  3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease - by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment
  4. Freedom to express normal behaviour - by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind
  5. Freedom from fear and distress - by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering

Mitchells & Butlers are proud to be a business that sets itself high standards and who demonstrates a proactive approach to Animal Welfare.

As a condition of supply to Mitchells & Butlers our suppliers must sign up to our Technical Guide for Food Suppliers. This includes our Animal Welfare Policy which covers all species and includes specific policies for individual species.
