Mitchells & Butlers and Marie Curie Cancer Care Celebrate First Anniversary

Mitchells & Butlers' employees are celebrating an extremely successful first year of support for Marie Curie Cancer Care by handing over a fantastic £95,000 to the charity.

Mitchells & Butlers selected Marie Curie Cancer Care as its corporate charity partner in November 2008 as part of its wider community charity programme. A £25,000 corporate donation kick started the partnership funding valuable hours of Marie Curie nursing care, helping the charity provide high quality care for people with cancer and other terminal illnesses in communities across the UK.

In addition, Mitchells & Butlers employees have supported the partnership by raising funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care through a series of fundraising activities and events. The Company set a £10,000 fundraising target, which employees completely smashed, raising £70,000 for the charity in just twelve months!

Events included departmental fundraising challenges, cake sales, raffles, a sponsored abseil, marathon events, books sales, pub quiz and skittle nights, dress down days and even a chilli plant growing challenge! The fundraising was also boosted by Mitchell & Butlers Sizzling Pub Co. pubs in the north of England and Scotland taking on the West Highland Walk Challenge. Nine willing team members bravely trekked more than 90 miles across the Scottish Highlands on the West Highland Way Walk. More than 100 Northern Sizzling Pub Co. pubs supported the effort by hosting individual fundraising events and their combined efforts raised an
astounding total of over £33,000.

Arun Sharma, Head of Corporate Fundraising at Marie Curie Cancer Care said:

"The amount Mitchells & Butlers employees have raised is a magnificent achievement and will help us make a real difference to terminally ill people and their families. £95,000 will help us provide 4,750 hours of nursing care, so I would like to thank everyone for their fantastic efforts and we're looking forward to another year of fundraising ahead."

Chris Edger, HR Director for Mitchells & Butlers comments: "Our employees have taken their support for Marie Curie Cancer Care to heart and through the outstanding funds raised have highlighted their enthusiasm, generosity and dedication to the charity.  We are extremely proud of this achievement and hope to build on this success as we continue the partnership into 2010."

Mitchells and Butlers will continue to fundraise for Marie Curie Cancer Care to the end of November 2010.
