Experience 'Gladness' in a glass... with a touch of Madness

They've performed on the top of Buckingham Palace but for British ska band Madness, a good old British boozer is very much their house! Having started their career with pub gigs, music group Madness have great affection for the British pub valuing good flavour, English brews and high standards when it comes to beer. Working with award-winning Growler Brewery (formerly known as Nethergate) the band has launched its own brew and offers its 'lager that's an ale' - Gladness - which will be available through Nicholson's Pubs across its 80 UK sites for the first 12 weeks.

Having spent much time lamenting the fact that more popular lager choices are predominantly from continental Europe and the States, Madness wanted a British take on this beer. The final results were brewed with solely lager hops for a distinct, flavoursome taste but brewed as an ale, to be served through the hand pumps for a smooth finish.

Packed with the Noble Tetnang leaf hop to create a gentle floral aroma with a touch of spice to the taste and finished with Saaz hops to add a light bitterness at the end, this light golden beer combines flavour and refreshment perfectly.

Named after a line in their song "Madness", Suggs commented "After many many years spent in a pub discussing and debating what would be our ideal beer, we decided to work with Growler Brewery to get on and do it. It's been a long but enjoyable process and we're very proud of our first attempt and we've got a great excuse to spend a bit more time in great British pubs!"

Rob Flanangan, owner of Growler Brewery adds "Following our initial meeting in 2011 we could see the band's genuine passion to create their own beer and we were delighted to help them, working through which styles they preferred, to co-create the final product. We got in touch with Nicholson's Pubs who are driven themselves to working with breweries and developing new flavours. They were happy to help distribute what we believe is a great tasting beer".

Ben Lockwood Assistant Brand Manager for Nicholson's Pubs says "We were delighted to support a great British band rooting for quality tasting ale in great British pubs. As well as being the exclusive distributor for the first 12 weeks, we will also be supporting the beer along with other interesting brews during our forthcoming Summer Ales festival between the 7 th July until the 4 th August this year".
