Volunteers M&B, along with Biffa, the UK leader in sustainable waste management, rolled up their sleeves to remove 60kg of litter from a Bournemouth beach this summer.

Along with dozens of bottles and cans, the team also removed discarded clothes, including flip-flops and socks, and hazardous marine waste such as fishing wire, from the sand and shoreline at Southbourne.

The event was organised by members of M&B’s kitchen development team and workers from Biffa’s Poole depot as part of Plastic Free July.

David Gallacher, Divisional Director, M&B Leisure Retail Ltd, said: “Our partnership with Biffa represents a ground-breaking approach to waste management, delivering significant environmental benefits with the aim of setting a benchmark for excellence in the hospitality sector.”

The collaboration reinforced M&B’s ongoing sustainability efforts. Since October 2023, Biffa has helped M&B divert 10,500 tonnes of food waste from landfill to energy recovery.

Mark Chapman, Biffa’s Head of Corporate Accounts, said: “We take great pride in supporting local sustainability projects and were thrilled to work alongside our customer M&B for the litter pick at Southbourne beach, helping to ensure our beautiful coastline is projected for everyone’s enjoyment.”

Recyclable waste, including plastic bottles, glass bottles, metal cans and paper, was put back into the circular economy to be transformed into new products, while non-recyclable general waste was sent to an energy-from-waste facility to be converted into electricity.
