Care for Communities

Over many years, our pubs, bars and restaurants have acted as a meeting place where people of all backgrounds can get together and socialise, bringing communities together through great experiences.

A meeting place in the heart of the community

We aim to give back to the communities we serve. We are continuously reviewing and improving the wellbeing support we offer our people and have developed strong relationships with organisations such as Fareshare and Social Bite to enable us to impact wider communities. In additional we have been working hard to strengthen our Modern Day Slavery policies and practices which has a broader impact across our supply chain.

Supporting charities

We are proud to work alongside Social Bite, a charity and social business providing homes, jobs, food, and support to empower people to transform their own lives. Their vision is to live in a society where no one should have to be homeless, and everyone should have the opportunity to live a fulfilling life.

Our partnership is centred on driving lasting change and we are actively fundraising to be able to support the work they carry out across the UK. We have an ambitious target of £1m for FY25. These funds will support provision of food and drink, along with a focused Jobs First Programme at Mitchells & Butlers, working together to provide real job opportunities for those looking to get back into employment. To date we have supported 26 people back into work within our sites and have funded a dedicated Support Worker within Social Bite, who plays a critical role in helping to manage the transition back into the workplace. We are excited by the opportunities this programme offers to those that are ready to take the step to transform their lives and we have ambitious plans to expand its reach over the next couple of years. In addition, we are helping in the development of a new “village” – Social Bite have one homelessness village where they offer housing to support to those impacted by homelessness in Edinburgh with two more underway. Our long-term ambition is to support the development of a village in England.

In addition to central and brand-driven activity, there are countless examples of site led and individual contributions to the community that take place every day - from sponsorship events to small acts of kindness. These place Mitchells & Butlers, its people and its pubs, bars and restaurants at the core of their communities, both serving and supporting them.

A sense of community

We are actively looking to enhance the positive impact we can have on local communities, including supporting charities, providing career opportunities, encouraging responsible drinking, and supporting health by enhancing and providing information on the nutritional content of our meals.

We understand the importance of protecting those communities and the environment around them, which is why we take our responsibility in this area seriously. As part of our sustainability strategy, we have a plan to increase the positive effects we can have on society and the communities we work in and reduce the negative impact our business and operations have on the environment.

Welcoming Our Guests

Under the Equality Act 2010, we must treat all guests fairly and ensure everyone (team members and guests) feels safe and welcome in our premises. As a licensed operator, we also need to promote the licensing objectives:

• Preventing crime and disorder
• Ensuring public safety
• Preventing public nuisance
• Protecting children from harm
• (In Scotland) Protecting and improving public health

We can refuse service or entry if these objectives are at risk, such as if someone cannot prove they're over 18, appears drunk, or is likely to cause a disturbance or disorder.

We have an Admissions Management Policy to help our frontline teams understand their legal duties, support them in keeping everyone safe and upholding the licensing objectives. This policy covers admissions and service generally, group visits, and filming.

In addition to this serving alcohol responsibly has always been at the heart of our business, please see our Alcohol and Social Responsibility Policy.
